For the Price of a Cup of Tea

Coles seems to have made a mistake… Or think their customers are completely stupid. I took this photo in the Coles at Broadway tonight:

2 for the price of 60

Sorry if it’s a bit hard to read (click for larger version), but the sign says ‘2 for the price of 60′. Pay for 60, but only get 2? I don’t think so! It took me quite a while to figure out, as I went over the maths in my head numerous times trying to find fault in my logic, but there’s no mistaking it. And yes, they did exactly the same thing twice, so it’s not a typo or anything.

Okay, so if you look closely there’s a little white note just to the south-west of the ‘2′, which I am pretty sure said it was actually 2 for $60, but still… What the hell?

Tweet Tweet

So I just signed up for what appears to be one of the latest crazes going around the interwebs; Twitter, a ‘microblogging’ ‘thing’. It’s pretty interesting so far, I guess, although it would be cooler if more people I knew were a part of it. Also, if SMH had a Twitter account (I’m relying on BBC World at the moment, but local news would be cooler). Anyway, my username is jamhos, and you can also find Tom and Lizzie on there at the moment. I encourage everyone to sign up and give it a shot!

**EDIT** If you decide to join up, feel free to post your username in the comments so we can make some sort of twitterhood :D

From Me to You

I want to fix it, but you won’t let me.

I can’t fix something I don’t know exists.

Or maybe I should just give up on fixing.

Is it really my problem?

I’d like to read a letter, but I don’t think it will ever get written.

What’s there to write about?

Ambiguity is just an excuse.

Speaking Straight

Unknown quotients, you must be using potions; how else could you tie my head to the sky?

In a Bad Way.

No Carly Simons, this is fo’ shiz.

And the Llama was right all along.

Staring

I started staring at her. A bit of a glare, but just playing. Trying to hide a grin. She stared back. The others asked what was going on. No answer. She stood up; I stood up. She walked backwards, towards her room; I followed. Still staring. We walked into the room. I closed the door behind me. We stared. We stepped towards each other…

And we kissed.

Last.fm Beta Site

So I noticed Steph isn’t a Last.fm subscriber any more, but I still am so I can tell you about all these cool things that we get access to. Admittedly it isn’t a whole heap most of the time (no ads, you can see who’s recently visited your page), but every now and then you get access to every computer geek’s dream: the beta.

Every now and then before releasing new features, Last.fm releases a beta version that subscribers can try out and give feedback on. This time they’ve gone a step further and put out a whole new beta website, with everything revamped and upgraded.

And it’s pretty darned cool.

One of my favourite new things is your personal ‘library’, which contains records of all the songs you’ve ever played. Mine currently contains a paltry 311 artists, something which I’ll be working on rectifying before the beta gets released to everyone. For comparison, Steph has 772 artists in her library, Nick has 575, Lizzie has 211, and Steve has 76 (including Steve pretty much just makes me feel better, lol).

Another very welcome feature is the ability to go through old shouts. It always annoyed me that you could only see the most recent few, but that has now been fixed. Woo!

There’s also a Facebook-esqe activity feed (but less creepy!), and charts are a lot more customisable.

Obviously, being a beta, it’s still missing a lot of polish, and there’s still a few issues here and there, but I’m really looking forward to see it in its finished form; it’s really awesome!

So if you want a sneak preview, become a Last.fm subscriber now ;) .

Someday I Will Fly With You

As bad as it sounds, I think I kind of miss Imogen and Train Girl.

I mean, I don’t want to go back there, but… I miss the butterflies in my stomach, the wasted days, being unable to do anything except giggle like a little kid. Back in year 12, the whole Imogen thing caused at least a couple of weeks worth of days where I got abolutely nothing productive done whatsoever, right before exams. And you know what? It was brilliant. As much as I screwed the whole thing up, I don’t think I’ll ever regret it, just for that.

I guess it wouldn’t be good all the time; it’d get a bit much, but… Man, it was fun. Maybe I need to find me another impossible girl? Haha.

I’ll just make this even worse and quote Ben Lee… “I’m in love with possibility”.

Supermarket Encounters

It’s kind of nice, and funny, when you’re walking up and down the supermarket aisles and you notice that you encounter the same person each and every time, going the opposite direction. Do they notice it too?

Then, for some reason or another, you both independently decide to skip the same two aisles in a row. You think it might seem a bit creepy, and she might think you’re doing it on purpose, so you take a random trip down the previous aisle, and that’s the end of it.

Also:
supermarket + music = supermarket++;

Phoning In

So last night was kind of strange; I spent a lot of time on the phone. First was an hour talking to Mum, and then I asked Elaine if I could ring her, because I had something to tell her. For some reason she rang me, and then we ended up chatting for close to an hour. Good, but… Weird. Lol.

Laptop, Spanish, Psuedo-Drunk

So things have been pretty pretty hectic recently, but hardly in a bad way. My Visa still hasn’t arrived, so I’m down to my last dollars, but it’s okay because I kind of actually like it, in some strange way. I am thinking maybe at the start of every week I will withdraw a certain amount of cash and that is what I can spend in that week, save special events. I like spending cash better than on card.

A while back (it’s crazy that I haven’t blogged about it already!) I got a new laptop, and it is totally awesome. It’s a Dell XPS M1330, and I love it. It’s so pretty and small (13″) and light and wonderful and fast and powerful and brilliant. Pretty much I’m marrying it. I also got a 22″ LCD monitor, which I plugged my laptop into and so I have a nice big viewing area. Lots nicer than my old one. But yeah, I have been taking my laptop to Uni a lot because it’s so easy now. Pretty cool. Sorry now it sounds like I’m bragging, maybe. I don’t know. But I don’t mean it that way, I am just really enjoying it after a couple of years with my old one. It’s called Algernon, by the way.

The only qualm I had with it involved getting wireless to work using Ubuntu, which took a bit of time and effort. But it’s all good now. Everything is running perfectly, even the nice special effects which my old graphics card could not do. My old graphics card couldn’t output properly to a second monitor, either, though.

Sticking with the technology side of things for the time being, the mp3 player fiasco seems to be solved. I hope so, anyway. They rang me up today, and I am now the owner of a brand new iriver E100. It seems relatively similar to my old one, and it’s 8gb still and all that. I loaded music onto it and it didn’t brick, so that’s always a plus, but it’s all just my freshly-ripped CD collection, so it’s not surprising. I am nervous about loading my non-personally-ripped files on, but I’ll change them a bit first, and hopefully they won’t screw things up. Also, the guy at the iriver place tried to blame the bricking on me, because apparently there are certain things that cause them to brick, like corrupt files. I don’t care, the player should have basic error handling in it. Their fault, not mine. I’m a software tester, this is the kind of thing I find and make people fix. Shouldn’t exist in a production unit. Enough said.

Today I had my Spanish oral presentation. I actually finished the last of it this morning, which was pretty bad, but it worked out okay. Dimitri and I met up a couple of hours beforehand to practice, and it was well worth it. I was reminded that we could use props, so I ran home to get a photo, some Belle and Sebastian CDs, and some books I’m currently reading (I mentioned all of them in my presentation). I had to look at my notes fairly often, but I think I did pretty okay in the end.

After Spanish I went out for a drink at a cafe with Dimitri, Michelle and Germaine. It was pretty fun, especially because it was the first time we’ve been able to convince Dimitri to hang around after class, and that was only because we got out of class early so his parking still had plenty of time left before it was not free any more.

On a final note… Oh my gosh, last night was funny. Lizzie and I went out for dinner, because I couldn’t get to my kitchen due to a film set being there. Afterwards, we wandered around and ended up getting some Sueño soft drink and Starbursts from Coles. As soon as Steve got home we got him to come over, and somehow I got to jokingly mention that we had put vodka in our drinks, and it managed to stick. Somehow it ended up that we’d had like 4 drinks each, at least, but I don’t know how. We were laughing at our in-joke, but Steve didn’t realise we had an in-joke, so he thought we were laughing at nothing, which made us laugh more, seemingly at nothing, thus perpetuating the cycle of pretend drunkedness. It probably didn’t help that I was rocking out to random music, which is not unusual, but not very common in front of other people. In the end I felt bad, and so told Steve tonight that we weren’t actually drunk. Also he was judging us a lot, which I figured probably wasn’t the best of things.

So yeah, now I’m just hanging around, enjoying the quiet :) . ISDM presentation tomorrow, though… Yay.
